Hymn Writers near to home

We are so used to singing in our worship that we tend to take it for granted but, although the early church certainly sang hymns, there was a period when only the clergy and choir were allowed to sing the so-called Gregorian Tones. Then, at the Reformation, congregational singing was restored and with such lively tunes that Queen Elizabeth I called them Geneva Jigs, after the Geneva Psalter which started it all. But because we take our hymns for granted we sometimes miss enjoying them to the full.
